Our nbCC Health and Wellness Coordinator, oversees the Bike Collective, where bicycles can be donated, earned, worked on or purchased, empowering and building a bike community. The Bike Collective is working to make biking accessible to more people who may not have reliable and consistent transportation, and who have bikes in need of repair and maintenance.

The nbCC Bike Collective provides space and resources to not only empower those who wish to have a bike or build their knowledge of bike maintenance, but also to connect bike champions with the community and offer the opportunity to share their skills and passion with others.

History

This is a nascent effort that began through Downtown Bike Around, as many people in the community and organizations had bikes they no longer used or rode, but did not want to throw away, and there were residents that wanted to ride in the Downtown Bike Around that did not have bikes. Bret and Amanda started to collect and continue to collect bicycles to help fill this gap and save bicycles from going to the landfill and be re-used instead.

Implementation

The vision for the Bike Collective is to provide a place for those who own or wish to acquire bikes to learn and employ bike repair and maintenance skills with volunteer bike mechanics and community champions.

The earn-a-bike option, enables residents the opportunity to donate their time at the Collective or at a community bike event learning bike repair and maintenance. Bikes are also available for purchase. A combination of monetary payment and time is also a purchase option. If needed, helmets are provided with every bike.

Activities/Events (check our calendar for more details)

In addition to our open hours the Bike Collective also:

  • Hosts the Monthly Downtown Bike Around
    • Happening in the summer & fall. Check our FB page for upcoming events.
  • Hosts FREE Pop-up Workshops & Events
    • Held throughout northern Berkshire County
  • Accepts donations of new or gently used bikes

We are NOT a Bike Shop

The Bike Collective does not duplicate the work and value of our local bike shops. We try to do everything we can to fix problems, but some are more suitable for a professional shop.

Bike Collective Workshop
Downtown Bike Around 2018
Bike to Work Day at nbCC

We CAN help with:

  • Adjustments & fixes for wheels, brakes, shifters, etc.
  • Replacing tires, tubes or other basic parts
  • Cleaning, lubing chains and other basic maintenance
  • Adding bike parts such as a kickstand or rack

We CAN help diagnose the problem and provide information so you can get it fixed. If the issue with your bike requires more than 4 hours of work, our team will recommend bike shops near you.
